Choosing a Senior Photographer: 7 Must-Know Tips

READ THIS before choosing your senior photographer this year. There are a few things to look for (and a few red flags to avoid). With 9+ years behind the camera, I’ve even had seniors come to me after their first senior shoot totally flopped.

  1. A Full Experience, Not Just a Quick Photoshoot!

Are there any extra incentives to hiring them? Hair and makeup? Group sessions? Custom locations? Styling? These bring so much value to the table!

  2. Price Matters. Value Matters More.

Don’t just compare costs — consider what’s included. I know this is hard with budgets and expensive costs throughout your senior year. But senior photos may be one of the only treasures you’ll keep forever. (Always ask about payment plans!!)

  3. Keepsakes vs. Just Downloads.

Will you get tangible keepsakes like a leather album, prints, or wall art? Digital images are great, but having something physical to hold, display, and keep forever makes a huge difference when deciding on a photographer.

  4. Preparation is Key

A great photographer doesn’t just show up with a camera. They guide you on timeline, weather, outfit choices, and locations so your session is seamless and you feel confident and prepared the entire time!

  5. Personality of the Photographer Matters

You’ll be spending hours together, so you want someone you click with. Check out their Instagram and see if your personality’s will work well together. You have to mesh well in order to truly capture YOU!

  6. Ask to See Full Galleries, Not Just Highlights

Don’t base your decision on a few of the best shots on Instagram. Seeing a full gallery shows you consistency in style, quality, and creativity — check out photographers blog or even ask them to see a full gallery! We’d all be willing to share.

  7. Word of Mouth is CRUCIAL! Moms Won’t Lie

Ask other seniors or parents about their experience. Moms (and dads!) are honest and will give you their true feedback (good or bad) on how reliable, professional, or fun the entire experience was!
