When is the "Right Time" to Take Your Senior Photos?
While preparing for your high school senior photos may seem exhausting, it is easiest to take it step by step, starting with choosing the optimal time to take your photos. In order to end up with the most beautiful and personal product, you should consider your desired outfit, setting, and overall vibe when choosing the right time to capture your photos. Another factor to consider is the flexibility of you and your photographer’s schedule when booking your session, as some seasons may be busier than others. With all of these factors in mind, the best time to take your photos is ultimately up to you! Continue reading to see my take on each season and its advantages!
Summer (June-August)
No need to stress about schoolwork or extracurriculars!
If you want to avoid missing class, summer is the perfect choice.
With predictable weather and lush green trees, a summer photoshoot is often the most reliable option. Plus, having your photos taken early in the year means you can use them all year long! From “Senior Sundays” to social media updates, your summer session photos will keep your Instagram looking fresh all year.
Summer sessions typically start around 5 PM—just in time for the golden hour glow!
Fall (September-November)
Fall is full of stunning colors! The vibrant leaves create timeless, picture-perfect photos you’ll treasure forever.
With cooler temperatures rolling in, a fall session can be the perfect way to capture your senior year comfortably.
Schedule your photos before the holidays, and your prints or albums make unforgettable Christmas gifts!
Fall sessions usually start around 4 PM, shifting to 2:45–3 PM as we get closer to and past the early November time change—perfect for that warm, golden-hour glow.
Winter (December-February)
While winter is usually not everyone’s first thought for a senior shoot, it can sometimes be just what someone needs! After all, choosing the best time to take your photos is unique to each individual senior and their vision.
The most attractive quality of a winter session is the slower and more flexible schedule. If setting aside time for a session is difficult for you this could be perfect. I also tend to have a more open and flexible schedule during the winter months.
The colder weather lets you get creative with layers, urban backdrops, and cozy indoor shoots. Don’t worry—you’ll look warm and stylish, even in 40-degree weather! We may even get lucky with a 60 degree day!
Winter photos still give you plenty of time to enjoy and share them during the second half of your senior year.
Spring (March-May)
Spring is a great time to take your photos because it is right before graduation, meaning you will look exactly as you will when you graduate! Bright spring colors and mild weather make this season great for outdoor shoots.
A spring photo shoot is something you can look forward to all year long, and is a perfect way to end this special chapter of your life.
Spring photoshoots allows the opportunity to take cap and gown photos or college t-shirt photos!
High school schedules are often not as busy without the football games and competitions. If you are busier in the fall, this may be the best time for your senior photoshoot!
There’s no single “right” time for senior photos—the best time is completely up to you and your family! When booking, think about your outfits, location, and schedule to make your session truly one-of-a-kind.
